The One World Calendar is a visual expression of shared humanity. Its purpose is to foster an understanding of and empathy with the world's diverse cultures and peoples.
The images selected for the calendar are beautiful, honest, insightful, and of outstanding quality. The theme for 2026 is 'Humans and Nature'. Humanity has been in a symbiotic relationship with the natural world ever since the first people emerged in Africa around 300,000 years ago. Early humans relied upon gathering the fruits and nuts from plants and trees or else upon killing the animals around them to eat. The earliest civilizations emerged when
people discovered first that they could domesticate animals such as sheep and pigs and then that it was
possible to control what was growing around them by planting seeds of barley, wheat, flax and lentils. Although the discovery of arable agriculture took place in Mesopotamia around 11,500 years ago, it was probably farmers like the one depicted in this Calendar from central Anatolia (part of modern Türkiye) who carried that knowledge to Europe as they migrated all over the continent.
This One World Calendar generally depicts humans interacting with nature in more respectful, less damaging ways. Fishing can be devastating to marine life and fish stocks when conducted by trawlers with industrial methods but those casting their nets into the lake in Mandalay are following a time-honoured practice that is more sustainable. The villagers in midwinter Mongolia and the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan are eking out a living in some of the most
hostile conditions known to humans – nobody here could fail to respect the power of nature. But the relentless march of human conquest over the environment continues, symbolized perhaps by the tower blocks that have been built on the ancestral land of two Chinese farmers. The need to change course could not be more urgent – to take the myriad measures necessary to prevent global heating and environmental degradation, and to re-establish a relationship with nature based on symbiosis and respect.
