With new high-speed lines planned for every continent, the world is experiencing a railway renaissance. But once again, railways are being built to serve the capitalist and imperialist interests which fuelled their development in the nineteenth century. High rail fares keep passengers on the roads and in the skies, and the pursuit of profit is threatening jobs, pay and conditions for railway workers. Amid a climate emergency and persistent global inequalities, how can we instead build railways to serve the people?
