The Story of Braids

A chance meeting between the book's eight-year-old publisher, Taya Kendall, and Munsch led to the creation of this beautiful 36-page book. Taya, an aspiring writer, had started a school newspaper to raise money for Children of Bukati, a charity that supports HIV/AIDS orphans and destitute children in a rural Kenya by providing school supplies, school uniforms and a lunch program.

Upon learning of the third-grader's efforts, Munsch immediately offered her this story to support her goal. Munsch's words are complemented by illustrations drawn by students at Taya's school, including one created by her six-year-old sister, Eden, the book's youngest artist. Braids was launched on June 16, which marks£ International Day of the African Child, a day that raises awareness of the plight of children in Africa, including HIV/AIDS orphans, impoverished children and those without access to education.
